The International Foundation Year – Health Science programme is a specialised university foundation course designed to support international students to progress to study Medicine abroad in leading Medical Universities.
We have two intakes in each academic year – September and January.
What is the International Foundation Year?
The International Foundation Year is a 7-9 month fast-track course designed for international students, just like you, who want to study Medicine abroad and need to bridge the gap between their local secondary education and starting a university degree.
You will gain the necessary academic skills whilst improving your English language so that you are fully prepared to study Medicine abroad at the best universities. To progress to medical-related degree courses, you will need to study the following modules on the International Foundation Year:
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Maths for Science
- English for Academic Purposes
Entry exams for the Universities.
UK medical schools require applicants to sit either the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) or the BMAT (Biomedical Admissions Test). These exams test your thinking skills and are a prerequisite for gaining a place or even receiving an offer to study.
The UCAT is more widely required but check which of these exams your chosen universities prefer. Both can be taken globally at test centres so that international students will avoid location constraints. Once again, speak to your Study Centre for guidance on where to study this in your home country alongside your studies.
The BMAT consists of three sections focusing on essay writing and scientific knowledge, while the UCAT is a time-pressured multiple-choice exam requiring basic maths skills. Choose the one that best suits your strengths. However, ensure that the one you are taking aligns with the requirements of the universities you wish to apply to. Entry requirements are strict, and you must comply with the requirements of the universities.”
Test dates for 2025 will be published in January 2025. https://www.ucat.ac.uk/about-ucat/ucat-test-dates/
Test dates for the UCAT ANZ for applications to Australia and New Zealand will be published in December 2024 https://www.ucat.edu.au/about-ucat-anz/ucat-anz-test-cycle/
Students must register and take the exam in the year prior to entry. Check UCAT and UCAT ANZ for specific rules and the university’s webpage for specific entry requirements.
