🎓 Guaranteed university progression.

Many international students who plan to study abroad find that their home country’s education system doesn’t fully align with the direct entry requirements for universities in Ireland or the UK. Even if you have completed your local high school O-Level equivalent, or hold an IB (International Baccalaureate) Diploma, differences in curriculum, English language ability, higher education entry requirements and visa requirements can delay your academic journey.

At DIFC, we provide a clear and structured solution – a fast-track International Foundation Year programme designed to bridge this gap and prepare you for entry into some of the world’s best universities.

Our Technology & Engineering Foundation Year provides the same academic level as GCE A Levels, the standard qualification for entry into universities in the UK and Ireland. Unlike traditional A Levels, which typically require two years of study for UK students, this accelerated course can be completed in just 7–9 months, enabling you to progress to your undergraduate degree faster while saving both time and costs.

Our Technology & Engineering Foundation Year is designed with your future in mind, concentrating solely on the subjects that truly matter for your university studies. Instead of covering broad areas that may never feature in your degree, you will develop a strong foundation in the essential building blocks for degrees in engineering, architecture, computer science and technology. Every module is purposefully aligned to give you the most relevant preparation for your academic journey and the career that follows.

If you are an ambitious international student aiming for a degree in engineering, technology or design -but your current qualifications or English level don’t yet meet UK or Irish university entry requirements – this programme is designed for you.

This course is ideal for international students who:

✅ Are non-EU students, and who don’t qualify for direct university entry in the UK or Ireland.
✅ Have completed their high school (or O-Level) qualifications.
✅ Have completed A-Levels, IB Diploma or equivalent, but do not meet university entry criteria.
✅ Need to improve their academic English before university.
✅ Want personalised support in choosing and applying to UK or Irish universities.

Bring your ambition to DIFC, and we will create the pathway to your future in innovation and design.

DIFC’s Technology & Engineering Foundation Year is delivered in partnership with NCUK and provides:

Hui Wen Tan from Malaysia testimonial

“My experience with DIFC has been exciting and all-around amazing. Since the beginning of the course, the staff and students services team have been very supportive, especially during the time of pandemic. You get pretty busy as the course is quite intense, so my advice would be to learn how to manage your time well or else you will be easily overwhelmed by the amount of work. But, overall I had a good time and really enjoyed my course, thanks to my classmates and dedicated teachers.”

Why study in Ireland?
What is the difference between A Levels and Foundation?
What to do when choosing a Foundation College

Why study in Ireland?

Studying in Ireland provides amazing opportunities for International students due to the high standard of education, the value for money compared to other key destinations like the UK and USA and, of course, the friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

What is the difference between A Levels and Foundation?

In a benchmarking study undertaken by UK NARIC in 2019, it was concluded that “the IFY programme develops a comparable range and level of knowledge, understanding and competencies” as the GCE A Level qualification. Therefore, “it can be considered to provide suitable preparation for undergraduate study”. Therefore, the obvious difference between A Levels and the NCUK International Foundation Year (IFY) is the time it takes to complete.

What to do when choosing a Foundation College

Review your progression options. Can this International Foundation Year help me get into the course I want to be in? Research each option completely. Academic details are important, such as the ratio of students to faculty but also the academic supports available. Some Universities teach you what you need to know, but not all provide counselling to help you progress further. Check out the location of the college. Is it close to public transport? Is it within walking distance of major landmarks or accommodation? Think of entertainment and a social life. Yes, your studies is about 24 hours a week but make sure to Google ‘things to do’ and you’ll find loads to keep you busy in your chill time! Question the level of support you can receive. Some students are happy enough to work away by themselves, others like to be guided along until they are comfortable. Either way, the DIFC Academic team are always happy to help.
