Choosing a foundation college – Do’s and Don’ts

Choosing a foundation college – Do’s and Don’ts

What to do when choosing a Foundation College

Do:

  • Review your progression options. Can this International Foundation Year help me get into the course I want to be in?
  • Research each option completely. Academic details are important, such as the ratio of students to faculty but also the academic supports available. Some Universities teach you what you need to know, but not all provide counselling to help you progress further.
  • Check out the location of the college. Is it close to public transport? Is it within walking distance of major landmarks or accommodation?
  • Think of entertainment and a social life. Yes, your studies is about 24 hours a week but make sure to Google ‘things to do’ and you’ll find loads to keep you busy in your chill time!
  • Question the level of support you can receive. Some students are happy enough to work away by themselves, others like to be guided along until they are comfortable. Either way, the DIFC Academic team are always happy to help.

What not to do when choosing a Foundation College

Don’t:

  • Think short term. You need to look at your progression options after your International Foundation Year. Where you want to continue your studies? What you want your career to be?
  • Pick the first college that offers you a place. Keep your options open! Review all your options, weigh up the pros and cons. It’ll be your life for a year at least, make sure you’re completely happy with your choice.
  • Panic! Moving abroad to study is nerve wrecking but just relax. The college staff are there to help you make the right decision for you. Our academic team can be contacted via email, chat on the website, WhatsApp and other social media channels.
  • Think a Foundation Programme is going to be easy. Our staff want you to be the best you can be, and they will push you. It’ll be hard work, but it will all pay off!

But most importantly of all, make the right decision for you.

Whether that’s an International Foundation Year with DIFC or another pathway to your career choice, give yourself time to make the right choice for you. Discuss it with your family and friends.

Ultimately, this is a year of your life that you can develop your professional skills while also having the time of your life!
