Your Fast Track to a Medical Degree Begins Here
If you’re an international student with dreams of becoming a doctor, dentist, or healthcare professional, Dublin International Foundation College (DIFC) offers the most direct and effective route to a medical undergraduate degree. Our International Foundation Year (IFY) in Medicine and Health Science prepares students for entry into over 80 universities for medicine and medical-related undergraduate degree programmes across Ireland, the UK and beyond.
Whether you are aiming for a medicine degree, dentistry, pharmacy, biomedical sciences, or public health, with two intakes each year this is the international student fast track to medical school you’ve been searching for.
What is the DIFC International Foundation Year in Medicine & Health Science?
A Globally Recognised Medical Foundation Course
The IFY in Medicine and Health Science is an intensive university foundation programme designed specifically for international students. It bridges the academic and language gap between a student’s current qualifications and the requirements of a UK or Irish undergraduate medical sciences degree course.
While DIFC’s International Foundation Year is NCUK-certified, the Medicine Foundation pathway has its own dedicated medical partners – including prestigious institutions such as the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). This specialised pathway aligns with the high expectations of the UK’s General Medical Council (GMC) and offers progression to medical universities that deliver clinical teaching, clinical placements and applied and experimental science programmes.
Two Intakes, One Goal
- September Intake: 9-month programme
- January Intake: 7-month intensive fast-track course
On successful completion, both options lead to a September start in medical school the following academic year. This flexibility ensures students from all backgrounds can align their current academic timelines with a clear route into an undergraduate degree.

This isn’t just a course. It is a launchpad to a bright future. By the end of your programme, students will:
- Have submitted a strong application to a medical school
- Understand how clinical practice is taught and assessed
- Be familiar with medical licensing assessments and interview formats
- Be confident in their academic English and scientific vocabulary
The course design is focused on outcomes. Every module, every assignment, and every support session is geared toward your progression and success in medical education.
Built Around the Needs of International Applicants
We recognise that international students often face additional hurdles, such as differing school systems, unfamiliar admissions processes and highly competitive entry requirements , especially when their qualifications are not considered the direct international equivalent of UK or Irish standards. This course exists to overcome those barriers.
What Makes DIFC Different?
- Fast-track Entry to University: In the UK, preparing for medicine through A-Levels takes two full years, but with our Medicine Foundation Year, international students can meet the same academic requirements in just 7 to 9 months.
- Specialised Teaching: Unlike UK A-Levels, which cover a broad range of subjects, our classes are purposefully focused on preparing students for medicine related degrees – with the academic depth and subject focus aligned to medical school expectations.
- Targeted Admissions Preparation: Weekly workshops, mock interviews, personal statement reviews are designed to help students develop the skills needed for successful medical school applications.
These aren’t just optional extras – they are essential support systems designed to strengthen our student’s chances of receiving a university offer, and succeeding once they begin their medical bachelor’s degree.

Medical School Admissions Tests: What You Need to Know
Understanding UCAT and BMAT for Medical School Entry
If you’re applying to study medicine in the UK, you will need to sit one of two key admissions tests: the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test)or the BMAT (Biomedical Admissions Test). These tests play a critical role in the admissions process and are required before you’ll be considered for an interview or offer.
UCAT: Widely Required by UK Medical Schools
The UCAT is a multiple-choice exam that assesses:
- Decision-making
- Quantitative reasoning
- Verbal reasoning
- Abstract thinking
- Communication skills
It is a fast-paced, time-pressured test that doesn’t require specific scientific knowledge, but it does assess how well you think under pressure; a key skill for future healthcare professionals.
BMAT: A Strong Focus on Scientific Knowledge
The BMAT includes three sections:
- Thinking skills
- Scientific knowledge (biology, chemistry, physics, and maths)
- An academic essay
This test is more academically demanding in terms of science content, and may be more suited to students with strong backgrounds in biology and chemistry.
Which Test Should You Take?
The UCAT is more widely required by UK medical schools, while a smaller number accept the BMAT. It is essential to check which test your chosen universities require and choose the one that best aligns with your strengths. At DIFC, we provide expert advice to help you make this decision early.
Global Access for International Students
Both the UCAT and BMAT can be taken at test centres around the world, eliminating location constraints for international students.
Important to Remember…
You must register and sit these exams in the year prior to your intended university entry. Be sure to check each university’s website for specific entry requirements and deadlines.
